Topsoil Depth Guide
The right topsoil depth depends on whether you are leveling a lawn, starting a new lawn, filling a garden bed, or improving poor soil.
Common Topsoil Depths
| Project | Recommended Depth |
|---|---|
| Light lawn leveling | 1–2 inches |
| Garden bed refresh | 2–4 inches |
| New lawn installation | 4–6 inches |
| Raised garden bed | 8–12+ inches |
| Grading or filling low spots | Varies by project |
Why Topsoil Depth Matters
Too little topsoil may not give grass or plants enough root space. Too much topsoil in one area can create drainage issues or uneven settling. Matching the depth to the project helps avoid over-ordering and under-ordering.
How Depth Changes Topsoil Volume
Increasing depth quickly increases the amount of topsoil needed. A 20 × 20 ft area at 3 inches deep needs about 3.70 cubic yards. At 6 inches deep, it needs about 7.41 cubic yards.
