Topsoil Depth Guide

The right topsoil depth depends on whether you are leveling a lawn, starting a new lawn, filling a garden bed, or improving poor soil.

Common Topsoil Depths

Project Recommended Depth
Light lawn leveling 1–2 inches
Garden bed refresh 2–4 inches
New lawn installation 4–6 inches
Raised garden bed 8–12+ inches
Grading or filling low spots Varies by project

Why Topsoil Depth Matters

Too little topsoil may not give grass or plants enough root space. Too much topsoil in one area can create drainage issues or uneven settling. Matching the depth to the project helps avoid over-ordering and under-ordering.

How Depth Changes Topsoil Volume

Increasing depth quickly increases the amount of topsoil needed. A 20 × 20 ft area at 3 inches deep needs about 3.70 cubic yards. At 6 inches deep, it needs about 7.41 cubic yards.
