How Much Topsoil Do I Need?

The amount of topsoil you need depends on the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover. Topsoil is usually measured in cubic yards or cubic meters.

Quick answer:

Multiply length by width by depth to find volume. If using inches for depth, convert the depth to feet first. Then divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards.

Topsoil Formula

Cubic yards = Length × Width × Depth ÷ 27

Depth must be in feet before using this formula. For example, 6 inches is 0.5 feet.

Common Topsoil Estimates

Area Size Depth Topsoil Needed
10 × 10 ft 4 in 1.23 yd³
20 × 10 ft 6 in 3.70 yd³
20 × 20 ft 4 in 4.94 yd³
30 × 20 ft 6 in 11.11 yd³

Example

A 20 ft by 10 ft area at 6 inches deep is 100 cubic feet. Dividing by 27 gives about 3.70 cubic yards. With 10% extra, you should plan for about 4.07 cubic yards.

Should You Add Extra Topsoil?

Yes. Topsoil can settle after spreading, watering, and compaction. A 5–10% waste allowance helps account for settling, uneven ground, and spreading variation.
