Mulch guide
Mulch Calculator Formula
Mulch is calculated by finding the volume of the area you want to cover. Once you know the volume, you can convert it into cubic yards or bags.
Quick answer:
Multiply length by width by depth. Convert depth from inches to feet first, then divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards.
Use the Mulch Calculator →Mulch Volume Formula
Volume = Length × Width × Depth
Convert Cubic Feet to Cubic Yards
Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27
Calculate Bags Needed
Bags needed = Cubic feet needed ÷ Bag size
Bag size is usually listed in cubic feet. Common bag sizes include 1 cubic foot, 1.5 cubic feet, 2 cubic feet, and 3 cubic feet.
Example Calculation
A 20 ft by 8 ft bed at 3 inches deep has a depth of 0.25 feet.
20 × 8 × 0.25 = 40 ft³
40 ÷ 27 = 1.48 yd³
40 ÷ 2 = 20 bags
Common Mulch Calculation Mistakes
- Forgetting to convert inches to feet
- Not rounding up bags
- Not adding extra for irregular beds
- Using too much mulch around tree trunks or plant stems
Should You Add Waste?
A 5–10% waste allowance is helpful for curved beds, uneven areas, spreading variation, and small measurement differences.
