Gravel Driveway Depth Guide

Gravel depth depends on the project type, soil conditions, traffic level, and whether the gravel is being used as a finished surface or as a base layer.

Common Gravel Depths

Project Recommended Depth
Garden path 2–3 inches
Decorative gravel 2–3 inches
Patio or paver base 4 inches
Driveway top layer 4–6 inches
Heavy vehicle area 6–8 inches
RV pad 8+ inches

Why Gravel Depth Matters

Shallow gravel may shift, rut, or expose the ground underneath. Deeper gravel provides better support, drainage, and durability, especially for vehicles or soft soil.

How Depth Changes Gravel Volume

Increasing depth increases volume quickly. A 20 × 20 ft area at 4 inches deep needs about 4.94 cubic yards. At 6 inches deep, it needs about 7.41 cubic yards.
