Drywall guide

How Many Drywall Sheets Do I Need?

The number of drywall sheets you need depends on the total wall area, whether you are including the ceiling, the size of drywall sheet you plan to use, and how much waste you want to include for cuts and mistakes.

Quick answer:

Calculate the total drywall area, subtract doors and windows, add ceiling area if needed, then divide by the square footage of one drywall sheet. Add 10–15% extra for waste.

Drywall Sheet Formula

Sheets needed = Drywall area ÷ Sheet coverage

A standard 4 × 8 drywall sheet covers 32 square feet. Larger sheets cover more area and can reduce seams, but they are harder to move and install.

Common Drywall Sheet Coverage

Sheet Size Coverage Best Used For
4 × 8 ft 32 sq ft Small rooms, repairs, and easier handling
4 × 10 ft 40 sq ft Taller walls and fewer seams
4 × 12 ft 48 sq ft Large rooms, ceilings, and long wall runs

Example Drywall Sheet Estimate

For a 20 ft by 15 ft room with 8 ft walls, the wall area is about 560 square feet. After subtracting one standard door and two standard windows, the drywall area is about 509 square feet.

509 ÷ 32 = 15.9 sheets

Since drywall sheets are sold as whole panels, round up to 16 sheets. With a 10% waste allowance, you would need about 18 sheets.

How Much Drywall Waste Should You Add?

Project Type Recommended Waste
Simple rectangular room 10%
Average renovation 10–15%
Rooms with many corners or closets 15%
Complex layouts or ceilings 15–20%

Should You Include the Ceiling?

If you are drywalling the ceiling, add the ceiling area to your wall area before dividing by sheet size. Ceiling area is calculated by multiplying room length by room width.

Ceiling area = Length × Width

For a 20 ft by 15 ft room, the ceiling adds another 300 square feet of drywall area.
