Concrete Slab Thickness Guide
Concrete slab thickness depends on what the slab will support. Light-use projects can often use thinner slabs, while driveways, garages, and heavy-use pads usually need more thickness.
Common Slab Thicknesses
| Project | Common Thickness |
|---|---|
| Sidewalk | 4 inches |
| Patio | 4 inches |
| Shed slab | 4 inches |
| Driveway | 4–6 inches |
| Garage floor | 4–6 inches |
| RV or heavy vehicle pad | 6+ inches |
Why Thickness Matters
Thicker concrete can handle more weight and is less likely to crack under heavy loads. However, thickness is only one part of the job. Base preparation, reinforcement, drainage, and concrete mix also matter.
How Thickness Affects Concrete Volume
Increasing slab thickness significantly increases how much concrete you need. A 20 × 20 ft slab at 4 inches needs about 4.94 cubic yards. At 6 inches, it needs about 7.41 cubic yards.
